The 1950 Formula One season marked the inauguration of the World Championship of Drivers, with 14 teams, comprising four works teams and ten independent teams, participating alongside several privately entered cars in six European Grands Prix. Notably, the Indianapolis 500 was exclusively contested by US teams, constructors, and drivers. The season featured a diverse range of chassis, engines, and car numbers, varying from race to race. A unique points system was employed, where the first five finishers in each Grand Prix earned points on an 8-6-4-3-2 basis, with an additional point awarded for the fastest lap. However, only the best four results were counted towards the championship, adding a strategic element to the competition. In addition to the championship races, several non-championship Formula One races also took place in 1950, although they did not contribute to the World Championship standings.
