2002 F1 Season

The 2002 Formula One World Championship, the 53rd season of FIA Formula One racing, was a testament to Ferrari’s overwhelming dominance in the sport. Michael Schumacher, driving for Ferrari, clinched his fifth World Championship, equalling Juan Manuel Fangio’s record. The season, which ran from 3 March to 13 October, included 17 races. Schumacher’s victory was historic, as he secured the championship at the French Grand Prix, with six races still remaining, the fastest any driver had ever clinched the title in Formula One history. Ferrari also easily won the Constructors’ Championship, with their cars proving to be significantly faster and more reliable than their competitors.

Aside from Ferrari’s dominance, the season was notable for the strong performances of teams like Williams and McLaren, with drivers Juan Pablo Montoya and Kimi Räikkönen emerging as future stars. The season also saw the introduction of new teams and drivers, including Toyota’s entry into Formula One. However, the season was not without controversy, particularly at the Austrian Grand Prix, where Ferrari’s team orders caused a stir. The 2002 season is remembered for Schumacher’s and Ferrari’s unprecedented dominance, setting new standards in the sport and sparking discussions about competitive balance in Formula One.
