2005 F1 Season

The 2005 Formula One World Championship marked a significant shift in the sport’s landscape, with Fernando Alonso and Renault ending Ferrari’s five-year dominance. Alonso became the youngest champion in Formula One history at the time, clinching his first Drivers’ Championship. Renault also secured the Constructors’ Championship, their first as a constructor. Alonso’s season was characterized by consistency and early dominance, winning three of the first four races and securing the title with two races to spare. Kimi Räikkönen, driving for McLaren, finished second in the championship, 21 points behind Alonso. Despite winning seven races, Räikkönen’s title challenge was hampered by reliability issues and penalties.

Ferrari, with Michael Schumacher, experienced a decline in performance, largely due to Bridgestone tyres’ inability to compete with Michelin following a tyre-change ban unique to this season. Schumacher managed to secure third in the Drivers’ Championship, aided by a controversial win at the United States Grand Prix, where only six cars competed due to safety concerns with Michelin tyres. The season also saw significant team changes, with Minardi, BAR, and Jordan undergoing ownership transitions, leading to their rebranding in the following season. The introduction of the Turkish Grand Prix and the regulation banning tyre changes during races were other notable aspects of the 2005 season.
