Asdrúbal Fontes Bayardo

Early Years and Beginnings in Racing

Asdrúbal Esteban Fontes Bayardo, affectionately known as “Pocho,” was born on 26 December 1922 in Pan de Azúcar, Uruguay. His journey in motorsports began in the mid to late 1950s, where he participated in the Argentine Formula Libre series. This series was known for its competitive nature and was evolving to be run under full Formula One regulations. Bayardo’s racing prowess was evident early on, as he won the first race held at Montevideo’s El Pinar circuit in October 1956. He achieved this feat in a Maserati 4CLT powered by a V8 Chevrolet engine. His success continued, notably winning at Interlagos in November 1957 with the same car.

Major Successes and Highlights

Bayardo’s most prominent foray into international racing came in 1959 when he travelled to Europe to participate in the 1959 French Grand Prix with Scuderia Centro Sud. He drove an elderly Maserati 250F but unfortunately recorded no time and failed to qualify. Despite this setback, Bayardo’s career in motorsports was marked by his resilience and continued participation in Formula Libre and endurance races in South America. His brief stint in Europe, especially his attempt at the French Grand Prix, remains a significant highlight of his career, showcasing his ambition to compete at the highest levels of motorsport.

Life and Legacy

After his active racing years, Asdrúbal Fontes Bayardo transitioned to a successful business career. In the 1960s, he became a concessionaire for General Motors in various Uruguayan cities and served as a director on the board of a company producing Opel-based pick-up trucks under the name “Marina.” He also worked for a production agency associated with BSE (Banco de Seguros del Estado), a prominent Uruguayan bank corporation. Bayardo passed away at his home in Montevideo in July 2006. His legacy in motorsports is commemorated by the Piriápolis street circuit, named in his honour. His nephew, Cyro Fontes, continues the family’s racing legacy, competing in Uruguayan and Argentine touring car racing.
