Early Years and Beginnings in Racing
Bob Gerard, born on 19 January 1914 in Leicester, England, was introduced to the world of mechanical transport through his family’s business, Parr’s Ltd., a bicycle manufacturer that later ventured into motor vehicles. Gerard’s racing journey began with a Riley Nine in the 1933 MCC Land’s End trial, where he immediately found success, earning a Premier Award despite being severely near-sighted. Throughout the 1930s, he continued to compete in trials and sprint races, and after acquiring a 1½ litre Riley Sprite, he ventured into circuit racing. His early successes included victories at Donington Park and a commendable performance at the Brooklands circuit.
Major Successes and Highlights
Gerard’s post-war racing career was marked by significant achievements. He purchased ERA R4A and, using his engineering skills, prepared it for the 1945 Cockfosters demonstration. Later, he acquired ERA R14B, which he modified for circuit racing. With this car, Gerard won three consecutive Empire Trophies and two Jersey Road Races between 1947 and 1949. His remarkable performances in the late 1940s, including a second place in the 1949 British Grand Prix, earned him the prestigious Gold Star award from the British Racing Drivers’ Club. In the 1950s, despite the rapid evolution of racing machinery, Gerard continued to compete effectively, particularly in the FIA World Championship, achieving notable finishes with his Cooper T23-Bristol and later the T43 chassis.
Life and Legacy After Racing
Bob Gerard’s impact on motor racing extended beyond his driving career. The Mallory Park track in Leicestershire honoured his achievements by naming its most prominent bend ‘Gerard’s’. He continued racing into the 1960s and used his expertise to support other drivers as an entrant well into the 1980s. Gerard passed away a week after his 76th birthday in 1990, leaving behind a legacy of meticulous preparation and a passion for racing that influenced many in the sport.
