Early Years and Beginnings in Racing
Jonkheer Karel Pieter Antoni Jan Hubertus “Carel” Godin de Beaufort, born on 10 April 1934 in Maarsbergen, Netherlands, was a Dutch nobleman and a pioneering motorsport driver. His racing career began in the late 1950s, marking him as the first Dutchman to score points in the Formula One World Championship. De Beaufort’s early years in racing were characterized by his participation as a privateer, driving for his own team, Ecurie Maarsbergen. He was known for his vibrant orange Porsche 718, a car he bought from the Rob Walker Racing Team. Despite being considered a mobile chicane and a danger to other drivers initially, de Beaufort matured into a competent and popular competitor, showcasing his dedication and passion for the sport.
Major Successes and Highlights
Carel Godin de Beaufort’s racing career, though short-lived, was marked by significant achievements. He competed in 31 World Championship Grands Prix and numerous non-Championship Formula One races. His persistence with the Porsche 718, despite its limitations, demonstrated his loyalty and adaptability. De Beaufort’s most notable success came in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, where he achieved a class win in 1957 and a best finish of 5th in 1958. His unique approach to racing, often driving without shoes and displaying a streak of self-deprecating humour, made him a memorable figure in the motorsport world.
Life and Legacy
Tragically, Carel Godin de Beaufort’s life and racing career were cut short following a severe accident during practice for the 1964 German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring. He succumbed to his injuries on 2 August 1964, at the age of 30. Despite his untimely death, de Beaufort’s legacy in motorsports endures. He is remembered not only for his aristocratic eccentricity and humorous antics but also for his pioneering role in Dutch motorsports. His career, though brief, left a lasting impact on the racing community and paved the way for future Dutch racing drivers.
